Sonoma Residence

A residence on the outskirts of the Town of Sonoma, this project has amazing oaks towering high into the sky both on site and on neighboring properties. The goal was to create a variety of areas to sit, talk, dine and just enjoy being in the dappled shade of these beautiful trees.

A small sitting court is defined by a change in paving material and wood benches that abut raised steel planters. Shasta daisies are a repeated theme in the understory plantings below the sites massive oak trees.

Stone pavers at sitting area

Thermory wood perimeter bench allows for additional guests to have impromptu seating and also provides seating in winter when furniture is stored. Aesthetically it works well as a striking edging treatment from pavers to planting beds.

Dining area perimeter bench

Radial trellis provides a simple yet striking gateway to the dining area, defining a separate room with minimal material. Strings of lights overhead give a festive feel, without blocking the oak tree canopies above

Trellis is tall to bring the eye up to see the juxtaposition with the oaks above. Light strands bring down the formality.

The mass of existing tree trunks provide a sculptural element to the area as well as a beautiful overhead canopy. low benches and planters provide viewing across while defining the spaces. backless wood bench extending length allows use from either side.

Reading nook

The goal was to create multiple inviting, open and airy rooms with plenty of places to sit and talk. Showcasing the existing oaks as art helped to bring them into scale with the rest of the landscape.
