Strouse House

The Architect’s house, originally a builder house constructed in 1958 as a basic box, three major additions and renovations and numerous smaller ones have been implemented to create a beautiful living space. Our goal: maximize daylight; create a strong indoor-outdoor connection; increase usable outdoor deck area; open house up and develop a passive summer cooling system appropriate for the climate; maximize view; minimize roadway sound; extend the life of the house to the maximum; create a beautiful landscape for the house to age with; and turn the house into something unique and very livable

This one-of-a-kind built in shelving unit was custom designed for the owner's extensive art collection. Rather than merely put the art on display, this shelf is a piece of art on its own.

A custom fireplace surround with layers of built-in shelving provides art storage, misc storage and a bench to sit on. Custom pine window covers slide between the wall and shelving to allow the windows and french doors to be completely revealed.

An open custom shelving unit creates a soft separation between the kitchen and living room while still allowing for transparency. By only partially opening the wall, the structure of the original 1950s home was kept intact.

French doors lead out of the living room to a small verandah off the main deck. With the doors open, the living room is transformed into a much larger space. The ceiling was vaulted to create the illusion of a larger space, and skylights added to bring in additional natural light.

The front door is tucked away at the front entry of the home, protected by the verandah overhead and gable roof projection. Concrete inset with quartzite and broken up by river rock create a luscious walkway to the front door.

A carport in front of the garage provides extra covered parking while still keeping the front of the house pulled back from the street. A deck overhead makes the extension usable space, while a cedar soffit makes the carport a nice space and ties it together with the entry.

The back deck off the kitchen and dining room has a large roof projection making it usable in all seasons. The family is able to enjoy a BBQ roast even in the middle of a rainstorm and can stay dry. The french doors on either end of the dining room connect the front and back decks through the house.

An extension off the front of a 1950s home provided a garage and carport below with a large expansive deck outside. French doors from the dining room create a continuous dining space from indoors to outdoors. The gabled roof projection creates a second covered deck space for small outdoor dining.
