On the agenda was to provide a new design concept for the dining area located adjacent to the kitchen, the formal living room, and a home office which sits nestled between the formal living room and the family den. Additionally, we were asked to curate the couple’s artwork and artifacts to create more collections and less clutter.

These eclectic empty nesters are both active in the arts and international travel communities and host networking events several times a year. We found through discussion that there were missed opportunities within the layout of the living room that could be addressed by re-imagining ways it could be furnished to really respond to how the couple uses their home.

The result is a living room that has movement and a color palate to match the adventurous nature of the clients. The sofas are semi-custom in a bold color with pillows mix-matched with 4 different fabrics, inspired by tribal kilim rugs. We sourced alabaster wall sconces in a pattern which is both modern and reflective of the couple’s passion for Africa.

We also created several kinds of built in shelving, both in wood and glass, to provide some much needed storage and organization to the office. We added linear krypton lighting to the existing exposed ceiling in the office to provide a balanced ambient light for both work and entertaining.

We addressed the dining area by identifying a linear table and curved chair set in a simple dark wood and light leather and anchored it with a striking painting the couple already had as part of their art collection. We switched out the existing chandelier for a modern blown glass fixture with a reflective canopy that creates the delightful illusion of a skylight over the table.
