Sunken Fire Pit and Container Pool

This backyard was once a simple lawn with a small patio and aging plantings that no longer supported how the homeowners wanted to use the space. The goal of the redesign was to transform the yard into a clean, modern outdoor living environment that felt architecturally connected to the home while maximizing functionality for entertaining, relaxing, and year-round enjoyment.

At the center of the design is a custom-installed MOD Pool, selected not only for its sleek modern form but also for the cost efficiencies compared to a traditional fully custom gunite installation. The pool’s rectilinear geometry aligns with the strong horizontal lines characteristic of Eichler architecture, allowing the water feature to feel integrated rather than added on. Surrounding the pool, expansive low-profile composite decking creates a seamless platform that visually extends the home’s interior living spaces outward, reinforcing the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that Eichler homes are known for.

Layered concrete terraces, integrated bench seating, a recessed fire feature lounge, and minimalist raised planters complete the composition, all designed with restrained material palettes and clean edges that complement the mid-century modern aesthetic. The result is a backyard that replaces unused lawn with purposeful outdoor rooms—spaces that respect the architectural heritage of the Eichler home while delivering a contemporary, highly functional outdoor living experience.
