This Midlothian, Virginia property presented a unique opportunity to convert a large but underutilized backyard with a gentle slope into a functional outdoor living environment. Although the yard offered depth, much of the space was unusable due to grade transitions and the steep drop beyond the rear property line overlooking Old Gun Road. The design goal was to create a comfortable, safe, and visually balanced outdoor space while maximizing the usable footprint closest to the home.

A custom gunite pool was strategically positioned and partially elevated to work with the site’s natural grade, allowing the project to create a level entertainment terrace without extensive disturbance to the surrounding landscape. Broad paver patios provide generous circulation space for dining, lounging, and entertaining, while the curved raised beam along the pool edge visually softens the footprint and reinforces the sense of enclosure. Safety fencing, structural grading, and carefully placed planting areas were integrated to stabilize the perimeter and ensure long-term durability along the sloped edge.

The completed design transforms what was once an open, sloping yard into a purposeful outdoor destination combining structural solutions, clean-lined hardscaping, and a fully custom pool installation to deliver a refined outdoor environment that feels spacious, functional, and seamlessly integrated with the natural wooded surroundings.
