Superb Manhattan Slab Shower

Slab panel installations are really where the rubber meets the road when it comes to marble manufacturing and installation. The designer of this project gave Rye Marble carte blanche when it came to seam placement. We opted for the most striking and beautiful choice… the book-match.

The book match is the practice of using sequential slabs from the same block of stone. The faces of these slabs are finished (polished or honed) on the faces that were once touching. The result when these slabs are placed next to each other are mirror images as if the slabs were bound together like pages in a book. This creates the stunning “V” and often diamond shapes made popular in high rise lobbies and office buildings found throughout the downtown Manhattan.

The biggest obstacle we faced in this Chelsea Manhattan townhouse from our choice of bookmatching was that there was no elevator and only a very narrow mid-century staircase that was not being replaced. In order to install this shower we were going to have to bring the panels in through the window. Not an easy task in a suburban home, let alone on the busy streets of New York City. In total this shower took us 5 days to install. With an additional day devoted to the wall behind the vanity, mirror surround and marble baseboard trim.

This job is splendid example of how we at Rye Marble use our technical expertise and knowledge of Italian white marble, to bring to life the vision of our customers everyday, one day at a time.
