Swim up bars are a great feature that works well to help integrate a pool and outdoor dining or bar area. But what most homeowners don’t understand is that this feature requires a great deal of engineering not only during the design process but also during the construction process. We all look at a bottle of water and don’t really think about the weight of it or how many of those tiny bottles it would take to fill a pool. But the weight of water is tremendous when you are taking about the capacity of a pool. A pool with a 10,000-gallon capacity is supporting over 80,000 pounds or 40 tons! Most pools use the surrounding soil to help support that weight but a swim up bar that opens to a sunken patio only uses the structure of the pool wall to support the water. So the engineering needs to be very carefully calculated.
