AWARD: 2013 National Designer of the Year Award - 3rd Place Baths over $30,000 - National Interior Design Society
Transitional Tommy Bahama - Major Master Bath Spa Remodel
This spa master bath remodel project was for a 6 ft. tall, arthritic, mature woman’s Master Bath Spa with a requested “Transitional Tommy Bahama Style.” The project began late February 2012 and was completed in late January 2013 due to the client’s extensive travel. Designed is a low maintenance space with a serene, uncluttered tropical beach aesthetic. The requested use of stone-look porcelain tile, color palette of earth neutrals, sage green, oil-rubbed bronze finishes, and rain glass to complement her tropical Master Bedroom, were achieved.
This major remodel was a complete gut of the 170 sq. ft. bath. This 1980’s bath featuring unsightly strawberry swirl, faux marble was removed. All electrical and plumbing were retrofitted with new fixtures to ensure the safety, function, health and welfare of the client, in compliance with building codes. Custom Soho Manhandles were integrated to accentuate the double vanity - the client liked African iron figures & motifs. Design & sustainable elements successfully included a custom 36-inch high double vanity with granite countertop, ADA-compliant Kohler low flow toilet with comfort height seating, custom cabinetry, hardware, glass backsplash, oil-rubbed bronze finishes, and a new French door. ADA- compliant, eco-friendly & low-lead compliant bath faucet & shower fixtures were selected because they conserve water. Sherwin Williams’s low Volatile Organic Compound wall paint was used. The ottoman’s faux leather is durable for bath environments and emits no gases/odors if wet. The fruitwood bamboo mirrors are decorative yet eco-friendly. The fluorescent flushmount light fixture is Energy Star Qualified. The porcelain stone-like tile provides carefree, low maintenance lifestyle, is less costly, yet delivers a comparable visual impact of natural stone.
This exceptional design successfully executes elements of universal & sustainable design without compromising beauty & tranquility while overcoming extensive challenges regarding safety, health, storage & organization, and timetable challenges.
