Traditional Kitchens for modern living

We are at a vacation home in Lake Tahoe. The theme is "barn". Love these old sinks. They are easy to clean (It kills me the grime around kitchen faucets in the counters), they have a place to dry dishes, and the basin is shallow. Deep sinks are for the birds.

Old wood walls have a rustic feel. The light switches are push buttom (new), restored old phone, the glass door is a "cooler". It is connected to the underfloor's cool air to keep vegetables fresh. most 1920s and earlier homes had similar storage

This is the morning. Lighting is integral to the way space is seen and felt. Layered lighting (multiple switched lights) allows for mood variation. I am moving towards work lighting and mood lighting in the kitchen, dining, and living rooms

You need to see the before photo to appreciate this kitchen. Small kitchen with a small budget. Custom cabinets, old stove, new fan in drywall hood. Playful brackets supporting cabinets and stove hood.

Glass cabinets add relief and character. I like to use wavy "Benheim" restoration glass.

The old kitchen hutch makes another appearance. Why am I so attached to old hutches? Notice the inside back of the hutch is finished as veritcal boards. Attention to detailing cabinets is integral in getting the right feel.

Great job on this remodel. Bill Brown, contractor, exceeeded all expectations. The original kitchen was small, cramped, ugly, and had short ceilings.

Old stoves tend to work well. We have had an old stove for 2 years now and it is great. Who needs 6 burners anyway?

We moved the whole kitchen to the back of the house from the dark center. It is enlarged, more open, and now has a new deck and access to the yard. Why did the 1920's home isolate the connection to the back yard?

Many of the windows in the formal part of the house are stained. The stained wood is lovely in contrast to white tile. It really changes the all white 2010 kitchen into something with a little more character.

There is always a question about the appliances and whether or not to have stainless steel. I like the story when it fits with the original house. Lighting, hood, refrigerator, DW are preferred to be paneld. We are dappling with the modern here, and we added a few recessed wall washers.
