Transitional Tudor

Located in Oakland a luxury designer’s own rental celebrates the beauty of designing with intention rather than perfection. This thoughtfully layered residence explores how great design can transform a space, not through extensive renovations, but through furnishings, art, texture, and personal expression that can lead you to the next version of yourself..

After a life altering transition Melanie started from scratch and moved into a rental to begin building a new space she could call home. This experience completely changed how she thinks about what a home is or should be. Despite limited finances she rented an impractically large house. It felt right to bet on herself and believe that as her life came more into alignment, she would attract more abundance and literally take up more space.

Melanie designed this house very differently than she would for a client. No floor plans to scale, no fabric samples, and no sit-testing. Working within the constraints of a rental, she embraced flexibility and creativity. Melanie leaned into a soft, feminine palette of warm neutrals, blush tones, florals, and natural textures, creating an atmosphere that feels inviting, relaxed, and effortlessly sophisticated. Rather than altering the architecture, the design relied on carefully curated retail furnishings, vintage finds, textiles, and collected artwork to create warmth, depth, and personality. In essence she chose speed and freedom over perfection, trusting herself to recover confidently from any potential mistakes.
The home's layout was designed to encourage connection. Comfortable gathering spaces invite conversation and entertaining, while more casual design choices throughout reflect an approach to living that prioritizes ease, authenticity, and enjoyment over formality. Every room was created to be lived in, whether hosting friends, spending quiet evenings at home, or accommodating the rhythms of everyday family life.

This home is a reminder that meaningful design isn't about creating a flawless home; it's about creating one that supports the life you want to live. Through thoughtful styling, carefully selected furnishings, and a willingness to embrace imperfection, this project demonstrates how a home can evolve into a place of comfort, confidence, and possibility.
