No Need to Compromise: Custom Bronze Windows Match Home’s Magnificent Design
What’s the best window for a majestic, neoclassical-inspired 27,000-square-foot private residence? That was a crucial question in the design of this home, an awe-inspiring space comprising a main house, complete with dome skylight and columned porch, along with two extending wings.
The owners had a bold vision for their dream home, situated just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, on a 200-acre property, and they didn’t want to compromise on a feature as critical as the windows. To match the owners’ desire for a grand, old-world style residence, Dalgliesh Gilpin Paxton Architects (DGP) identified bronze as the best choice for the fenestration. Not only would bronze fit perfectly with the aesthetic: The quality of bronze, in particular its durability, aligned well with DGP’s goal to design a one-hundred-year structure, a home as enduring in its integrity as it was stunning in appearance.
One feature in particular that drew the architect to Steel Windows and Doors USA was our capability to provide thermally broken bronze windows. Considering the vast amount of window space for the home, along with the chilly winters and humid summers of Central Virginia, overall thermal efficiency was a priority.
Allowing bronze’s unique luster to emerge
To provide a genuine sense of our products and service, we fabricated a full-size mock-up bronze window and hand-delivered it to DGP’s office. Bronze is indeed one of the most maintenance-free options for windows, but Steel Windows and Doors USA takes particular pride in the purity of our bronze products. We want homeowners to experience the beauty bronze affords as a living finish. That’s why we don’t add clear-coat or varnish. Our burnished bronze darkens naturally and beautifully over time, creating a uniquely authentic patina, a feature particularly appropriate for this Green Mountain home. Additionally, the sightlines of our bronze frames are remarkably narrow, especially for a thermally broken window.
DGP’s satisfaction with our custom Brombal OS2 window convinced them that we were the ideal choice to provide the home’s windows and doors, which led to future projects with the firm.
The benefits of customization
Steel Windows and Doors USA enabled the owners’ dream and the architect’s specifications to remain unfettered by manufacturer limitations. In fact, this home allowed us to showcase our ability to work closely with our manufacturing partner, Brombal USA, to deliver our clients exquisite, customized products. Highlights include the following:
· Along with arched-top bronze windows, we fabricated custom semi-circular bronze louvers to match them.
· We also fabricated several large arch-topped bronze screen doors, which meant the owners didn’t have to settle for a square door with an infill panel at the top.
· The thick stone walls of the residence required unusually wide jambs. But painted aluminum was definitely not an option. The solution was fabricated custom bronze panels, allowing an all-bronze presentation for the entire door space.
The quality and attention to detail for the home’s windows extend to the muntins, which are true-divided, and the glazing beads, which are sloped for aesthetic enhancement. A particularly stunning example of the fenestration is the two-story sunroom with a bronze-clad curtain wall. In addition, where appropriate, we incorporated exposed cremone hardware, providing a charmingly antiquated mechanical accent to the windows.
