Weekend Home, Old Lyme, CT

This was our weekend home in Old Lyme. An incredible spot, "the last of the Mohicans'". It was part of a farm, one of the largest undeveloped properties left on the shores of Long Island Sound. We did not own it but we moved in for a year and stayed 20. The house was built for the Farm manager, Michael Finnegan in 1910. The back of the house faced south, with open fields all the way to the Sound. In 1910 house was insulated with blocks of seaweed, years later the house still had a scent of the sea and most days it glowed with daylight. It was a poetic space perfect for artists and over our 20 years we shared the house with more than 30 visual artists. Most were studying at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, some at the Lyme Art Association, some were simply taking a sabbatical. It was a way to share this beautiful place, a way to pay the rent for a weekend house we probably should not have had and a way to enrich our lives by spending time talking about the important things, art!
