Western Exposure - APLD Bronze Award

A Bronze Award winner from the International Landscape Design Awards 2016, Western Exposure was a captivating and challenging project in South Boulder. The clients desired a modern plan where the indoor and outdoor space was seamless. We worked to develop a landscape plan that integrated the homes modern architecture with an existing pool and sloped site. A fixed size and position courtyard (as the garage and original home foundation were to remain) was coordinated with other professionals to achieve the finished result. Outdoor rooms flow from one to the other and blended-in sight lines from the courtyard connect the spaces together. The courtyard serves as a more formal area for adults while a fire pit terrace off the pool handles the site grades and connects the artificial turf field to the spaces. Flow patterns around the pool allow access from multiple points. The home architecture and Western Exposure's grand facade designed by architect Steve Dodd and built by Hughes Construction needed to blend with a more native landscape into the natural mountain view. Plantings and design for landscape were developed to minimize the impact of areas on the backdrop with a screening berm created to block neighboring homes. The entire site plant pallet was created with low water plantings to give color and texture throughout the year.
