As the foliage turns yellow, the fragrance is released and can be enjoyed from a considerable distance.I was introduced to this remarkable tree when I moved to the Pacific Northwest and was working at a nursery. The scent was tormenting me as I hunted everywhere for the kettle corn stand that I was convinced must be nearby. My colleagues eventually stopped laughing and pointed out a cluster of these magnificent trees at the far end of the parking lot. Not surprisingly, I now have one in my own garden. I like the idea of creating little hidden nooks where one can sit in the garden away from the everything, have a cup of tea and read a book.
do you think it would grow in Michigan in moist soil conditions?
It is claimed to be hardy to zone 5 so as long as you are in south or central Michigan it should be okay. It could benefit from a sheltered location. They like moisture during establishment but shouldn't be situated in standing water.
