The kitchen has a clean and functional look, with maple cabinets and stainless steel countertops, as well as a large dining room table right in the middle. It's Spero's favorite room in the house. The decor reflects the homeowner's passion for traveling. For example, the red and yellow tea tins above the stove are from South Africa. The red vessels above the cabinets are Japanese picnic baskets from the 1940s. Spero's mother collected the various birds. "She insisted I use them in the house, and I resisted for a long time," Spero says. "I moved them around several times before they finally found their home. I get more questions about those ducks than any other item in the house."

2. Display a collection. The space on top of cabinets is prime real estate that often goes to waste. Collections like Fiestaware pitchers, baskets, small sculptures, quirky objects or pottery will draw the eye up over less-than-dreamy cabinets.
