What are your thoughts about wood floors with cabinets stained the same color? - We are renovating the kitchen in our traditional 2-story brick (1920's) home with existing dark wood floors and lots of beautiful classic wood trim with a similar stain as the floor throughout the house. We are enlarging the kitchen into the formal dining room space and trying to blend the kitchen in with the existing woodwork. Any thoughts on cabinet color if we want to keep the darker wood flooring throughout the main floor? Although we love white (or ivory) kitchens, this doesn't seem to maintain the feel or look of the home. Also, since the kitchen cabinets will now be visible from the main formal entrance it seems we would want it to blend rather than stand out. Thoughts? Thank you.

I think it really just depends on the look you are going for. The project above was in a 1920's tudor so wood cabinets & flooring felt very much at home. Or if you were doing a vacation home in the mountains for example, lots of wood makes sense. I would be especially careful in a small and/or dark space with using too much wood. There is really no right or wrong answer on this. Look at lots of pictures, find what appeals to you and go for it!

My personal opinion is that the floors need to be different than the cabinets. If you're trying to match, it's going to be hard. You're most likely going to get the wood for your floors from a very different place than your cabinets, so the chances of a match aren't good. When I see people try to do this, I find that they end up having cabinets and floors that look like they were supposed to match, but don't. I always like when people do a floor that is intentionally different than the cabinets. You don't have to worry about matching, and the possibilities for great color combinations greatly increase.

Everything went smoothly, I love my kitchen! How would you suggest maintaining soapstone to continue to keep dark? I have been using mineral oil (food grade). I love it when applied but after drying it lightens up considerably

I love the windows! Is this a projected frame window, stool and apron trim or just the way the casement window is designed? Can you tell me what company makes this window? and how deep is the sill? What type of wood trim is around the window?

Thanks for your questions. This project is from several years' ago and in our archives so I don't have specifics for that information. From the photo and memory it is a larger than usual casing, probably about 4" with approximately a 3/4" backband. Hope that helps!

This is cherry wood with a custom stain by cabinet manufacturer Woodharbor (a mid-tone brown stain).

Thank you. This is a discontinued product from Virginia Tile called Dune. There are many similar types of travertine tiles out there.

This kitchen made it in simply because yellow currently seems to be an exceedingly rare choice in kitchens. This is the kitchen I imagine in my French countryside retreat—definitely a good thing.

Having a nice, deep sill to place objects on is an advantage to casing a window with distinct pieces. And the horizontal piece below the stool (shelf), called the apron, can be shaped and sized as you like. The stool can be shallow or deep, depending on what you'd like to place there and you're overall design.
