What is the height of the hearth? I am trying to determine a height tall enough for people to sit on but not too tall. Any help is greatly appreciated! Right now they have my hearth a little taller than 7". That is too short for me. Thanks! :)

COASTROAD Hearth & Patio

Hi Reema - Believe it or not, there are no codes that reference putting a TV over a fireplace. The most important reference in this case is a rare tome entitled "Common Sense and Good Judgement", which is hard to find anywhere.

Kidding aside, there are only restrictions regarding clearances to combustible materials - that is, things that can catch fire - and those can be found in the Residential Building code for masonry fireplaces, or in the installation manuals for manufactured fireplaces.

The area immediately around a good gas fireplace gets up to 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit, and combustible materials are allowed in an area that will still get from 150-200 degrees, which is too hot for a TV.

There are number of good "rules of thumb" to go by, but the first thing to identify is the type of fireplace you are using and what kind of arrangement you would like to use. There are several good discussions here on houzz.com. Search in the box above using the terms Fireplace and TV and you'll find A LOT of advice.
