How do you like the stainless steel countertops? Pros/cons. Would you do it again? We love to cook. Son in law a French trained chef. I like the more industrial and contemporary. Noisy? Scratches, I will have large island of stone. Appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

Al Fortunato Furnituremaker

The Janka Hardness scale is a measure of wood hardness. Here is a comparison for you:

White Pine 380 lb-ft
Alder 590 lb-ft
Cherry 950 lb-ft
White Oak 1350 lb-ft
Hard Maple 1450 lb-ft

As you can see, as compared to some common domestic woods, Alder is quite soft, not much better than white pine.

Stainless Steel is easy to clean and quite durable, its only problem is that's its susceptible to scratching.

Yes, even though the handles are centered, these cabinets are hinged on the left ( and some on the right), so its not the traditional placement, but it works well and should be fine for your cabinets.

I HATE horizontal handles. My cabinet maker installed them for me this way without my permission. They are ergonomically ridiculous, making it harder to open them from the middle than from the edge of a door. There's a reason handles are installed at the edge of a door, i.e., to make them easier to pull. They are harder to pull from the middle. And since I have 5 cabinets above my sink, I can never remember which way to open them since the handles are in the middle I do not, repeat, NOT recommend this.

It definitely looks like a 2x4 matte tile, stacked...Ann Sacks Tile has a few similar colors, copper green matte and green tea are 2 similar ones, but they have some others with this much variation as well.

These cabinets were custom fabricated by City Cabinets in San Francisco (no longer in business) . The wood species is Alder and yes, the cabinet panels are veneered.
