I have almost zero standard kitchen cabinetry in my kitchen. Just antique pieces (such as a Hoosier cabinet for larger storage) mixed with open shelving. I love it! You just have to be a little more mindful about not allowing things to clutter since you can't hide it, but that is not such a bad thing.

This colorful jumble makes me happy... and the black backdrop with wood countertop keeps it clean while homey. Nothing stiff about this kitchen. Lots of space for cookbooks and cannisters, items of interest. However, the dustiness could be a problem quickly. I would prefer glass doors protecting shelves.
