A Change In Plan
After a major life shift, this full-floor residence overlooking Lincoln Park became the canvas for a new beginning. The client, a longtime collaborator of Jaffe Architecture + Interiors, envisioned a serene, light-filled space that honored her art collection, welcomed friends, and aligned with her more introspective chapter ahead. With sweeping lake and conservatory views, the apartment had potential—but its dated interiors and irregular layout needed rethinking from the inside out.
Jaffe was brought in before the purchase, offering early insight into how the existing configuration could be transformed. The design response began with a full gut renovation, revealing the bones of the home and making way for a more open, intuitive layout. Rather than rebuild with conventional walls, the team introduced a series of sculptural “cubes”—freestanding millwork volumes that define zones while concealing infrastructure and structural columns. The result is a home that flows naturally, with clear circulation paths, concealed pocket doors, and seamless transitions from one moment to the next.
Materiality played a critical role in establishing calm and cohesion. A palette of wood, stone, and metal reflects the client’s love of tactile finishes and muted tones, with custom details woven throughout—from a lake-facing shower to an oversized pivot door in burnished brass and etched Italian glass. Full-height doors and integrated hardware contribute to the home’s quiet precision, while variations in ceiling height subtly define gathering and private spaces.
Designed to evolve with the client, the home now offers flexibility and grounding—a contemporary city retreat shaped by art, light, and intention.
