Pure Michigaas

Tucked into the woods of Harbor Country, this multi-generational family retreat designed by Jaffe Architecture + Interiors is rooted in the simplicity and resilience of its natural surroundings. The clients envisioned a restful, flexible second home to bring loved ones together across generations—a place for laughter, meals, and spontaneous sleepovers. The result is a low-maintenance yet high-comfort getaway where family and connection take priority.

Inspired by the local agrarian vernacular, the design unfolds as a pair of gabled structures joined by a central connector. Living volumes extend outward—the main house, pool pavilion, and a screened porch that opens fully to the landscape. Natural light filters in from both east and west, framing wooded views and enhancing cross-ventilation. Every detail supports ease: en-suite bedrooms, dual laundry rooms, a concealed pantry, and a dog-friendly mudroom ensure comfort without fuss.

Materials like thermally modified wood, trimless edges, and mitered corners were chosen to weather beautifully and blend seamlessly into the environment. The screened lounge at the heart of the home becomes the gathering place, opening to the garden, fire pit, and pool.
