Shuffling The Decks
What began as a kitchen renovation grew into a full reimagining of this vintage Chicago duplex penthouse. Perched above the city with lake views and access to multiple terraces, the home had architectural character and potential—but a fragmented layout and underutilized spaces left it feeling constrained. The clients turned to Jaffe Architecture + Interiors with a desire for something more: a residence that honored its original charm while fully supporting the way they lived now.
Jaffe responded with a renovation that clarifies flow, elevates comfort, and unlocks the potential of every level. Drawing on the home’s old-world spirit, the team retained and refinished existing oak paneling while introducing new woodwork that speaks the same language in a modern dialect. Rooms now open effortlessly into one another, and concealed doors and circulation paths allow for seamless transitions between public and private spaces.
A two-story rooftop addition brings in light, air, and function. Enclosing part of a west-facing terrace added space for a new primary suite, a yoga room, a home office, and an upstairs laundry—freeing the main level for more generous living and entertaining. A thoughtfully updated kitchen, complete with a fireplace and a custom walnut butcher block and quartzite island, now anchors the home’s social heart.
Zoning constraints, co-op approvals, and structural complexities were all carefully navigated, with solutions that feel effortless in the finished design. From discreet acoustic solutions to smart storage, every decision was guided by a commitment to livability, legacy, and lasting comfort.
