A Landscape Like a Sonnet
Poems are like landscapes. And conversely, landscapes are like poems. A myriad of components are crafted, arranged, and assembled to develop the message, whether written or visual.
Developed in four phases, the landscape design and construction for this residence on 1.4 acres is crafted traditionally, reflecting not only the lines of the Neo-Colonial home but also the refined and traditional tastes of Patty and John, the homeowners.
Like a sonnet built with three quatrains and a couplet, this landscape is also conceived and constructed with three primary quatrains (spaces) and a couplet.
Phase I, or Quatrain I, is the immediate front, displaying traditional formality and order.
Quatrain II is the primary back social space featuring a fireplace, fountain and expansive bluestone patio.
Quatrain III is the Gertrude Jekyll tribute garden in the back which boasts a bold, yet refined mix of perennials that provides a strong viewing experience from the upper level patios.
The Couplet portion of the sonnet is commonly referred to as a folly garden. It is a walled garden, inspired by its British counterparts and rests separately on a parcel across a private road.
Fire, water, custom lighting, natural stone walls and generous living spaces in this experiential sonnet convey harmony and love for the space at hand.
And, like a heartfelt sonnet, the message is sincerely and warmly delivered to all that read or view it.
