A New Feature
Spray Lake Sawmills approached us in need of a new and improved office front. Their current front landscaping consisted of a below-grade garden that collected water, with unkept shrubs and grass that coped poorly in the shade of the building. They wished to re-allocate the space into a patio with some added trees to be utilized as a shaded, sitting area for both staff and tour groups. The construction itself went very smoothly, with frequent comments from the staff about how much they looked forward to having extended lunch breaks on their brand-new patio! A particular challenge we faced during construction, was the realization that the grade of the pavers would be forced to slope back towards the building. The concrete walkway that the pavers would meet was higher in grade than the point we could meet on the building. Our solution was to place weeping tile against the building to drain water to a safe point. The weeping tile was buried with 10 mm gravel and pavers set on top, spaced a little wider with no sand allowing water to drain freely away from the building. We constructed a paver layout that was simple but would age well, alternating two colours and three different sizes of Holland pavers. Mid-way through the install, one of the staff suggested that we cut in their diamond shaped logo and add a third colour of pavers into the centre of the patio; this was a great suggestion and it turned out amazing! The new patio is a lovely feature to the Spray Lake Sawmills office, and it is pleasant to see how well it is being used.
