Andante Road 2021

I’ve always had an affinity for Andante Road. It’s a very private, tree-lined lane with only 7 homes. The first property you encounter after you cross the quaint bridge is the iconic Whale House by architect, Michael Carmichael. Further down the street are two homes by well-known Santa Barbara architect, Edwards Pitman. There is also another fantastic property by the architect, Charles Schmandt. The neighborhood has the feel of a rural setting, yet this magical, wooded street is only a 3-minute drive from the Santa Barbara Mission and Rose Garden, and just a 5 minute walk to the Botanical Gardens and countless nature trails that wind into the foothills. The home is situated on an outcropping overlooking Mission Creek. It is essentially a glass tree house set in a magical grove of mature oak trees. What’s not to love?! The house offers the best of mid-century architecture: clean lines with a mix of both organic & geometric shapes, minimal ornamentation, a juxtaposition of different, and sometimes contrasting materials, and lots of glass, bringing nature indoors. You can stand in the middle of the living room and see the ocean out of the windows to the South and the mountains out of the windows to the North. There are multiple outdoor living areas with stunning views and a setting that is incredibly peaceful. The detached guest house and storage offer incredible flexibility for how a family might live & work on the property.
