Arbor Lane, McLean
The lot geometry and the owner’s home wishes came together as a perfect
match. The lot has a very difficult footprint to build a home with a main floor
master, no matter how big or small. The front to back depth of the buildable
area ranges from 26’ to 54’ and is 179’ wide.
The owners wanted a house that was open to the exterior on all sides. The
house is one room deep at the great room allowing for light to flow in from the
front and the rear. The 12’ ceilings in this space give it an added level of drama
and light. The front entry opens up to the main stair that overlooks the great
room with a clean dramatic cantilevered glass rail.
The Kitchen, family room and nook are separated from the Great room by a
dramatic linear fireplace. This open area is crowned with cathedral ceilings and
high soaring windows to flood the area with light. A strong simple kitchen sits to
the front of the house with a large arched window. Off the kitchen we have the
right sized mudroom core with dog shower / laundry and pantry.
The Owners suite wing of the house captures the large home office and
bedroom suite. The owner’s bedroom has access to the rear patio as well as a
large window wall bringing southern light in. The owner’s bath is very straight
forward, with split vanities, a large shower, and light streaming in from three
sides.
The second floor also allows for windows across the front and rear of the house.
Each comfortably sized bedroom has a full bath and walk in closet.
The Exterior of the home balances a New Nantucket vibe and scale of a much
larger home. The home balances its length with a unique window rhythm and
openness.
