Ashland Residence

A two phase project completed over a span of 7 years: Phase I alteration and addition (completed 2011) to an existing one story single family residence in Santa Monica built in 1906. Challenges included connecting the addition to the existing unreinforced masonry brick home while opening the interior to more natural light and open ceiling planes.
Phase II (2016-2017): A two story, contemporary addition infill between an existing single family home and detached garage in Santa Monica. Completed in 2017.

Detail of exposed ceiling joists with former attic vent converted to a window for afternoon natural light from above. Cloth string pendants with Edison lamps were employed throughout the Living Room -dropped just below the bottom of the joists -for a dimmer light.
