Minimalism in Mar Vista: A new 2-story home contrasting dark interior finishes and light interior materials is nestled into an urban "meadow” created by Hsu McCullough using retaining walls running the length of the east property line masking a street thoroughfare above the cul-de-sac of the project. The result, a hillside berm in the backyard offering a long wedge shaped canvas to place an L-shaped house with maximized privacy using terraced landscape and gardens of existing trees. The front facade - a series of long, stepping boxes overlap and dissipate with framed glass openings to connect exterior features to the inside. A conserved oak tree at the entry as well as rooftop terraces with ocean and mountain vistas join the distinct program such as an art gallery with 13-foot tall ceilings and Calcatta Viola clad gas fireplace spilling to the private yard with swimming pool, spa and outdoor kitchen.
