Beach Front Lookout
WINNER HONOR AWARD 2017 Connecticut ASLA Professional Awards RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
This property restoration was designed and implemented with mindful respect to the uncontrollable natural environment. Extensive shoreline reconstruction and an innovative storm water/surge protection area work to protect and support the new pool and recreation structure.
A pre-hurricane dream of an in-ground pool on a lower lawn terrace adjacent to the sound was immediately scrapped; a site that ended up more than 4 feet under water when the storm hit. The house looked like a barge on the sound, an image that set our design in motion. Mimicking the bow of a ship, the pool and patio terraces were programmed as an extension of the existing house plinth.
Storm water management was handled with a series of systems; infiltrators beneath the lawn, a double layer of concrete sea walls, beach plantings for erosion control and ultimately a sunken lawn area to handle the next “big one.”
