Hillside Retreat
Situated on a sloping hilltop one hour north of Manhattan, this weekend retreat boasts 27+ acres of recreation, adventure and relaxation opportunities, where the site and surrounding environment take center stage.
Our client’s desire to create an outdoor structure to provide a covered area near their existing pool, evolved into the creation of this multi-level garden pavilion and entertainment space. The property, and in particular the pool area, hosts numerous annual parties ranging from elaborate themed affairs, to intimate social gatherings. The design of the pavilion needed to be flexible enough to accommodate these diverse groups, house an outdoor kitchen, bar, dining and seating areas, pool, ping pong and various game tables, while gracefully integrating into the established setting. Constructed of native red cedar, selected for its natural texture, color and beauty, the material extends to the roof deck viewing and sun bathing terrace. Classical elements from the Tuscan order were incorporated, most notably a trellis entablature that reaches out reinforcing the connection between manmade and natural environments.
Over the years, the property has developed to include almost every conceivable recreational/sport facility; from pool and tennis court to a regulation-size basketball court, sand volleyball, badminton, bocce, amphitheater, exercise/hiking trails and a putting green. Nestled within the landscape, this latest structure provides an exciting new location to sit, eat, drink and play. And with its 16’ retractable ceiling mounted movie screen, positioned to be viewed from under the structure as well as inside the pool, the pavilion itself is pure entertainment.
