Black & Light House

This project earned an AIA Vermont Excellence in Architecture Design Award in 2022.

Black & Light House was designed to actively participate in the sublime landscape and legend, and play off the perceived mysterious quality of light. This was accomplished by using a simple black volume with strategically sized and purposefully located penetrations, each producing distinct lighting appropriate to each programmatic element. For example, bedrooms capture morning light through horizontal east-facing apertures while main living spaces have larger south-facing openings to capture the full light of day. The library, a place of refuge and contemplation, was at the center of the plan with only one small north-facing window.
