Bretton Woods

The Bretton Woods property project began in the Summer of 2017 with an initial focus on developing the limited space of the front yard area. The clients asked that a formal patio area for the fire pit and hot tub be designed to accommodate and entertain while leaving enough open space for the grandchildren to play. With less than 2,000 square feet to work with, a compact, but appropriately sized hot tub patio and fire pit lounge now allows for inviting views of the White Mountains region. After seeing the impact made by the front yard design, the homeowner's signed on for additional concepts with a priority to reimagine the main point of entry from the back parking area. In addition, the clients expressed interest in a connector pathway from the prior installed hot tub area to the back entry walkway. Scott Palmer of Feather and Wedge completed the second phase in the Fall of 2018. Much of the materials used in this project were re-purposed, including all boulders, fire pit ring and outdoor patio furniture. Due to the site's elevation and geographical position, an assumption of zone 3 hardiness was determined, limited the plant palette possibilities. However, a commitment to native plantings integrated into the design was achieved. Black-eyed Susan, Red-osier dogwood, Dwarf Bush Honeysuckle and more of our native favorites help to add ecological significance to this renovated. landscape. Forgoing irrigation installation furthered a limited planting design, so long-blooming, drought-tolerant species like Sedum, Catmint and Spirea were desired. The results have yielded a landscape that endures the challenging atmosphere of a high elevation environment in the Northeast.
