Bricks & Boulders

The existing garden’s brick details inspired the new beautiful brick work in front and back yard. The garden was originally built by the owner’s father who added a large brick planter for vegetables into the back yard and brick details to the front. The back yard featured a small concrete patio with ramp for wheelchair access to the living room. The area between patio and planter was a visual gap.

When the garden got redone, we integrated the existing brick planter and the old concrete patio into one large, new outdoor entertaining room with patio & planter level with the indoors. A lower secondary area for planting was connected with extra low and deep steps and two ramps, one of them in a new, circular design to still allow for easy access with or without mobility support. The new patio’s rounded shapes, the half round stairs, the interesting ramp, new iron work, a mosaic of colorful tiles, and the integration of large, natural boulders into the brickwork in the Craftsman tradition add interest and beauty to the house and garden.

The house color was adapted to the new garden, with an olive green, receding main body color and two darker accent walls that picked up the leaf color of the new tree.

Drought-tolerant planting adds color and movement.
