Small Garden Lives Large

The garden surrounding a mid-century modern home received a full make-over front and back.

The front yard lawn was replaced by drought-tolerant plants - native strawberries as the main groundcover - and poured-in place stepping stones that now create a direct entry to the house without having to walk past the cars on the driveway. The circular arbor, here shown early on before the plants grew in, draws the eye towards the front entrance.

On only 1,400 SF, the back yard packs a lot of punch: A build-in outdoor seating area with large sofas ready to recline are built around a small fire pit. The back of the seating area is a modern water feature that spills into the ground next to the seating. Two additional fire pits are integrated into the long curved retaining wall in the back. A large awning can shade the entire area and retracts remotely or timer controlled, as needed. Modern table and benches create a dining area under an existing tree and a expansive modular deck hides the existing hot tub and creates a private area in front of the master bedroom.
