Brooklyn Contemporary Corian Kitchen

Full renovation of an upper-story apartment in a concrete frame building in Brooklyn. We removed a very tired galley kitchen and replaced it with a shimmering contemporary composition.

View of the newly opened up kitchen in this upper story apartment. The dark brown bamboo flooring contrasts with the light glossy finishes of the kitchen. Curved corian counters, blue-gray lacquered cabinets, and glass and porcelain tile give the kitchen an ethereal feel.

The kitchen is a composition of form in space. Different materials define separate forms which interweave and frame one another. The island backsplash produces a narrow bar which shelters a built-in table.

Massive sliding closet doors continue the lines of the kitchen down the hall toward the entry. The main hallway of the apartment is a runway of gray porcelain tiles which run through the kitchen. Suspended lines of light over the hallway draw visitors from the entry toward the kitchen.

The composition changes dramatically from different angles. The range is separated from the dining table by a curved corian (solid surface) bar.

Cabinets are operated by touch latches and finished in a high gloss varnish. The dishwasher is integrated and the microwave is a drawer mounted under the counter in the island.

A custom-designed credenza floats on the wall in front of the entry. Its form compliments the curved counters of the kitchen. The outer ribbon is painted with a semi-gloss white finish while the small cabinet within is white oak with a clear varnish.

Reverse Architecture designed this custom desk to match the DWR Line Credenza (designed by Nathan Yong) in white oak. The desk is standing height or uses the same stools as the kitchen bar. Wires are concealed in a slot at the back panel.
