Dot house

Twin speculative houses were built to explore the possibilities of structural stressed skin panels along with all wood construction.

This cottage is made of a hybrid of Structural Insulated Panel walls, oak timber joists, and well insulated two by rafters. The "wallpaper" of battens on the exterior camouflages the panel geometry.

Twin elevations

The living dining room goes with the front to the back of the house and tapers on one side in order to emphasize the perspective. A bonus of the timber construction is that we can suspend the porch swing wherever we would like.

Interior space

Here is a second variation of the living room in the twin houses. The windows highlight the woods outside. Colors also blend the inside and the outside.

Living room

The Great Room has windows on three sides to bring the woods into the house. The wood stove requires its own air supply as the SIP panel construction is so tight.

Dining

The bay window is constructed of two straight window units that meet at 90 degrees, forming a prow. On the inside, a window seat projects into the living space. This creates a small semi personal space within the larger room.

The winding stair personifies an arts and crafts approach to building. The handrail is more a screen than a railing, built up simple wood construction.
