Mid-Century split level

Split level homes are rare on the North side of Chicago. A young family wanted to re-imagine the house as a contemporary living space. Family room

The child's bedroom is quite small. A large window from the previous plan floods the bedroom with sunlight. The open door provide and expansive view all the way through the house.

The window in this picture was a doorway in the previous plan. The bedroom was created out of a formal hallway. The room is the perfect size for a nursery.

The lower level of the split level was unfinished, allowing for a new guest room and family room to be created. Multiple windows open to the front yard of the house negating the feeling of a basement.

Basement renovation

The master bedroom was created out of two previous small bedrooms. An island of IKEA storage cabinets provides ample closet space. Creating two directions to get out of bed provides a sense of openness and opportunity.

The island of closets has sliding doors. That do not project into the hallway. The master bathroom is at the end of the hall and lines up with the closets so that the bath remains private in relation to the bed.
