Facelift For Curb Appeal
A drab, undistinguished exterior is transformed by a distinctive Tuscon order portico with copper roof, mahogany beadboard arched ceiling and entry with a custom mahogany doorset with leaded glass panes. A custom hand-carved name board with the address in gold leaf over the door and a pendent lantern completes the composition. The two-car overhead garage doors previously monopolized attention. Sourcing an overhead garage door that mimics two pair of french doors (complete with door handles) allowed the garage to masquerade as living space and for the portico and front entry to take center stage. A circular lead path was chosen to separate the eye from the linearity of the adjacent driveway alongside the path, redirecting it to the front entry. A center fountain and bluestone stairs and risers add elegance to the composition. To soften the large brick facade and add dimension and texture, a wisteria vine was installed to cover a pergola over the garage, nicely balanced by an Asian Pear tree that was espaliered between the windows. Copper window boxes spilling blooms hark back to the Norman architectural notes of the parapet and leaded glass casement windows.
