FHT Kitchen remodel

A small outdated kitchen gains modern functionality while retaining the charm of the original space.

This compact kitchen remodel was made challenging by the full feature list the client requested; working together we crafted this terrific new space.

BEFORE: All four appliances were in the northwest corner of the kitchen: no prep space near the range; no storage around the refrigerator; a tiny under-cabinet microwave, and a dishwasher far from the sink.

By moving the range and dishwasher to the opposite side of the kitchen, we were able to create a new pantry, bar area and storage above the refrigerator. The full depth fridge was recessed into the wall behind to give it a built-in look.

We changed the species and stained the cabinets to create the "hutch" as a separate piece of furniture. Mirrors in the door panels above are distressed and divided by lead tape.

A butcher-block counter top for the hutch helps to enhance the illusion of a separate piece of furniture.

A toe-kick heater under the new apron-front sink replaces a cast-iron radiator that had resided under the original basin; new location for the dishwasher moves it closer to the work area.

The double-oven range at right allows for flexibility when cooking for the family, and the new layout provides a working surface on both sides when there was none before. An extended windowsill above the sink provides a place for herbs and flowers.

Although the footprint of the kitchen remained the same, by removing a doorway we were able to borrow some space and light from the adjacent hallway; now the room feels bigger than before.

We managed to carve out an area for a small bar: glasses in the cabinet above, cold wine storage below.

Quartz counter tops provide durability with easy maintenance; a glass and marble tile backsplash add sparkle.
