Five Peaks Lookout

The Five Peaks Lookout sits in the heart of Oregon’s wine country on the northeast slope of Bald Peak in the Chehalem Mountains.

The main challenge for the design of the residence was to address the clients wish to take in as much of the uniquely expansive five mountain view looking east, from south to north of Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Rainier. While at the same time maintaining an intimate connection to the landscape.

The project consists of a house, an art space with both ceramic and painting studios, along with a detached garage for storage of toys, tractor, and other landscaping implements. To capture as much of the view as possible the spaces of the house are organized in a bar running from south to north with exterior covered spaces carving away at the volume of the bar, functional spaces have been set on the west side and view oriented spaces on the east. The home takes advantage of the sites gentle slope to the east with a direct connection to the landscape from the master suite, office, outdoor living space, and kitchen. In a dramatic move to maximize the view from the most public rooms of the home the cantilevered living and dining space look out to a 270 degree view of the site and all five mountain peaks. Supported by the concrete fireplace and chimney structure the dining and living rooms float above the landscape as it slopes more steeply to the north into the valley of a small perennial creek.
