Garage Rooftop Getaway, Wicker Park, Chicago
With this project the goal was to create a private outdoor space for the whole family. Virtually every wall is covered with cedar privacy screening or tall planter boxes filled with grasses. We wanted to give this rooftop two separate rooms: 1. a dining area in the open 2. an evening relaxation area under the pergola. To make this pergola stand out from your standard pergola we ran the inner beams on a perpendicular direction to create a vaulted ceiling appearance. With the planter box on the back garage wall we planted climbing perennials to eventually cover the entire pergola with vines. The 6x6 pergola post installed in the center of the garage was place to hold a hammock in the future. There is a low voltage lighting system installed for a nice evening mood setting. There are 5 different varieties of ornamental grasses along with many flower perennials. The pergola is constructed with a mix of smooth and rough finish cedar to combine a rustic-contemporary mesh. The pergola is stained with a clear finish to maintain the original cedar look for years to come. We also painted the deck floor a darker rich earth tone.
