Goodsell Alpine Home

This project features contemporary architecture and landscape design complementing each other on a net-zero home (NZE and NZEB). The design required visual and noise buffering from the busy street. Several narrow tall evergreen buffers were required because of close neighbors with high windows looking over the fence into the yard. Desirable views of the mountains were preserved while screening adjacent homes.
When approaching the home on the front walk one passes through a series of plants from low to high with contrasting color. The walk then passes through a space with Japanese maples in rock mulch reminiscent of a Japanese Garden where it is isolated from the street commotion and noise.
Several plants were used that are unusual for the area. A giant redwood was located to block views and act as a focal point of the breezeway... Two types of ferns were placed along the narrow walkway where walls are close on each side. In this breezeway the ferns move beautifully with the slightest breeze and are particularly stunning at night illuminated by the down-lights on the wall. Two types of clumping bamboo provide beauty and interest against a tall blank wall. Potted plants enhance the deck. A tall specimen aspen tree was trimmed of all lower branches so that its white trunk could extend between and upper deck/walk and the home with its branching and shimmering leaves at the roof of the second level. Formal upright boxwoods provide softness in the narrow space between the home and the outdoor spa. At the spa a tree peony and variegated hostas were placed for beauty and their lush foliage affect. A weeping spruce was placed against a blank wall where its shape draws attention. . An espalier apple tree was placed against another wall where its shape and flowers will have a softening and beatifying affect. The owner grew up on an apple farm so this also has a sentimental or nostalgic affect.
This is not a "shrub it up" or "fruit basket" landscape that is prevalent in suburbia. It is well thought out with the owner playing a major role in its design to assure it is the outdoor space they desired.
