Gualala Remodel
The existing 25 year old “western style” house complete with decorative wagon wheels and horseshow andirons faced south on two acres of coastal ridge in Mendocino County.
Because there was no entry experience inside the house, a generous entry experience is provided outside: “entrance” occurs upon going up the first flight of steps that pass under a wisteria trellis to an octagon-like deck space. From here one has an overview of the orchard, and is directed around and up to the skylit front porch which has a small sitting balcony and allows additional light to reach the kitchen windows.
Large clerestory windows are provided in the living room by continuing the gable roof up to form a shed roof and “light tower” which also serves as something of a focal point for the entry deck. These windows provide solar gain in the winter and summer heat build-up is relieved through a pair of ceiling ventilation hatches.
