Windhover

In 1985 we designed a modest 870 SF Sea Ranch vacation rental house, carefully set adjacent to a young pine hedgerow and oriented towards a view of famed Black Point. A dozen years later new owners engaged us to add a bedroom, bath, and living room as well as upgrade the existing interior.

The difficult problem of nearly doubling the size (700 SF addition) without overpowering the original form led to treating the addition as a large but modest lean-to, its roof attached beneath the existing eave line and extending to the side property line setback.

A truss spans the new opening in the existing east wall and a 2x10 wall of exposed framing is dyed red to create a set of feature shelves and display niches. The framing is backed with Wonderboard which helps unify it with the concrete fireplace, formed from pieces of the original bevel siding . A skylit entry brings light into the new bedroom, bath, and living spaces.

The original entry columns are reused, set up on pedestals to fit new height requirements, and the original weathered entry door is refaced with sheet metal. The bedroom and bath repeat the use of dyed wood and the lavatory counter repeats the hearth of black concrete with accents of broken firebrick. Vertical grain Douglas fir is used for floors, barn doors, and kitchen cabinet faces and tops.
