Spalding
The house is situated on a hillside lot which is exposed to cold prevailing winds from the northwest. The panoramic view includes both north and south coastlines but is interspersed with existing and future neighbors to the north, east, and west. The program consists of a thoughtful, very complex set of living relationships seeking to facilitate family intercommunication.
Complex spatial relationships are organized around a wind protected entry courtyard. Private areas occur in end-anchoring octagonal towers reminiscent of nearby Fort Ross, while common areas occur in a low, rambling, multi-faceted crescent shaped element which alternately focuses on views and screens out neighbors. This organization, in conjunction with a garage/shop which burrows into the hillside, reduces the visual impact of the house’s bulk on the growing community.
The interior is a continuous spatial sequence of rooms positioned in terms of outward views, intercommunication, and adjoining spaces. Overlooking the sequence is a cantilevered study, acting as a floating command post. Rooms are defined by level changes, low walls, orientation and juxtaposition with adjoining spaces, allowing a number of activities to take place simultaneously without being isolated from one another.
