High Style

When this couple purchased the adjoining penthouse space in the prestigious Westin building it was gloves off!! Working in a condominium environment is challenging from both a structural and aesthetic point of view, but the results can be both timeless and prove that luxury can be executed in unusual shaped environments and in confined footprints. Apparent from the onset that the clients favored a sophisticated style, but still they wanted a comfortable living environment we accepted this challenge.

PROGRAMMING DIRECTIVE
-Programming included a spa room
-Office
-Family room including a game area and bar
-Formal entertaining space
-Organization and storage for everyday living without going to storage

DESIGN CHALLENGES
-The addition of the new space still left us with a long linear format with natural light from one corridor
-Structural impediments were exposed everywhere and had to be worked around
-Lighting spaces was challenging because of both the post tension construction and the adjacent neighbors below and to the side
-Installing new plumbing and drains also proved challenging because of the structural limitations

DESIGN SOLUTIONS
A curvilinear ceiling design that went from one end of the space to the other was designed to install layers of light and create visually wider spaces.

The structural columns on each end of the spaces were converted to a fireplace feature and the other with a wine storage feature with color changing light and covered in stainless steel panels.

Glass walls were used to allow light into the couples office located on the corridor side of the unit providing a connection to the outside and an intimate environment.

The natural place for the spa room was also on the corridor side.

The masters sleeping area is isolated from the room’s fabulous hotel like master suite with its own hospitality station, laundry, and bath suite. Working in a space with NO natural light and getting his and hers dressing areas, a luxurious shower experience and his and hers closets were MUSTS for the owners. Perhaps the most amount of time was spent executing this space.

The homes bar was placed at the window line and features a built in moving table for the couples happy hour and is imbedded with their very own life motto to each other “I think you are awesome” …echoed by their design/build team.

We think they are pretty awesome.
