Kawartha Highlands Net-Zero Energy house

This rural new build, located near Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park just north of Peterborough, was built after the clients’ old home on the same property was struck by lightning and destroyed. This unfortunate circumstance led to a unique opportunity: Building an entirely custom, Net-Zero house.

The one storey home is laid out in a rough “T” shape. The Great Room, a paved breezeway, and the detached garage make up the top branch. The lower branch contains the home’s bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry and mechanical rooms.

The home uses a double-wall assembly. The load-bearing 2x6 wood stud frame holds up the engineered truss roof and extensive roof insulation. Set 7.5 inches inside the 2×6 stud walls is an additional 2×4 wood stud structure, on which the interior air barrier and plywood sheathing is applied. The 7.5 inches between stud walls is filled with insulation, creating R60 walls.

The property also houses PV solar panels on the south-sloped roof and the detached garage and workshop.
