Living Room Balancing Act
For their newly acquired vacation home on the coast of Maine, the owner’s goal was to offer more bedroom suites for visitors. By closing off an open loft above the double-height living room, a private bedroom was created from an open corridor. The introduction of interior dormers mirroring the exterior wall provided window seats upstairs with focused views to the coastline. A horizontal crown molding was added with indirect lighting to softly illuminate the painted beadboard ceilings. This ceiling redesign transformed the living room’s ambiance from the feeling of occupying an unbalanced shaft to that of a calm, centered hearth space for gathering with family and friends.
