Maywood Ave. Home - Ann Arbor, MI

This is a total remodel of a home in Ann Arbor. We added a master bedroom, dining room, kitchen, and family room to the back of the house, a new second floor containing two bedrooms and a bathroom, and remodeled most of the rest of the interior. The scale of the house, as viewed from the street, didn't change significantly, allowing the home to still fit into the 1040s neighborhood. The living room is the same size as it was originally, but we moved a door opening from the far wall (where the colorful painting is) to the other side of the fireplace (not shown). This change made arranging furniture much easier because all the circulation is along one side of the room.

The front of the garage was moved out to allow more storage. The original front wall of the garage was in the same plane as the windows above it. The top of the garage was turned into a deck to allow the owners to enjoy the afternoon sun and visit with neighbors.

The new deck is two steps higher than the existing porch to allow adequate framing and headroom in the garage.

Rather than have an ugly downspout right next to the front door, Studio Z suggested a rain chain to manage rainwater. The bowl at the bottom of the chain is actually connected to a drain, which runs down through the garage and to the city's storm sewer system.

This room was originally the owner's daughter's bedroom. After she left for college, the owners converted the space into a home office/guest bedroom. The Murphy bed, which was custom built by the contractor from parts available on the internet, allows enormous flexibility.

This used to be a solid wall, and there was a door at the bottom of the stairway. We removed the wall and door (and several other walls and doors) to open this space up and provide a more generous entrance to the home.

This is the second floor guest bathroom. The long sink has two faucets. The door with frosted glass allows someone to use the toilet or bathtub while someone else uses the sink. There is a tubular skylight in the toilet/bathtub side since the configuration of the roof made a window impossible.
