This request was for living room storage that would hold a range of adult and children's belongings. The living room was home to the office as well as the usual elements of television and hangout space. The client was afraid to go too big with a custom built-in storage unit as she did not want the space to feel smaller. The opposite is always true of built-ins as the newly found organization and ability to store all of the bits away opens up the space completely. We also wanted to incorporate something for the clients’ paintings, as she is an artist as well! She wanted the unit itself to be more than just storage, but visually interesting. We went with two finishes for the unit with the inside painted a rich dark blue, which made the TV recede and allowed the artwork and items on the shelves to pop. We then stained the oak a mid-tone grey for a neutral ground to support the other color and pattern in the room.
